Sharepoint Online Organizational Chart

The org chart that i can access under "My site" is frustrating and confusing.

First, I found a bunch of ex-employees are listed there.  I do some research and I find that they are there because of their "Manager" AD property.  So, even though they are disabled accounts without licenses.

I can accept that, so I go through and I empty all "Manager" attributes.  I wait.. days.  This does not appear to synchronize.  So, as a test, I change the manager of one of the ex-employees and sure enough, that employee changes under the org chart.

So, I try some other techniques to make the manager attribute empty. Nothing seems to work.

I cannot delete these users yet, but I can't have them showing up like this.  Why doesn't this blank attributes replicate all the way through, and what options do I have?
