Azure and Data Deduplication

Hello,

I am a new forum poster so please bear with me...

I am currently working in an environment which has a 2012r2 file server for the home drive data for employees. On one of the volumes, data deduplication is in use.

Over the next 12 months we are intending to migrate the vast majority of our servers over to Azure and this would include primary storage for our user’s documents. The question is, does the fact that their data is currently subjected to de-duplication affect the data when it’s moved up into the cloud?

The theory behind my concern is that the users at the moment have pointers in their area’s to the ‘master’ copy of the file and when those pointers are moved into the cloud, will they still work like they do on our on-prem server, will the data be inaccessible to those who have pointers and not full files?

If you could point me to some articles/documentation on this I would appreciate it greatly. I have read documentation relating to moving de-duplicated data from one server to another but nothing involving moving de-duplicated data to the cloud.

Thanks in advance.
