How do I resolve "We're sorry, we couldn't open your workbook"?

I have some documents on a SharePoint site, and every time I try to open the files in my browser (IE, Chrome, Edge, Firefox), I get an error message that states that the document could not be opened. Here is the error message

I am able to open it in the client application, but I want to be able to open it in the browser. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?
