Importing to document library and maintain managed metadata

I'll try to keep this brief...

We are migrating libraries from an old SP 2010 on-prem system to SPO. First thing to say is that this all works nicely, we have maintained old versions and they're all showing. Permissioins are maintained and the world is lovely.

But... the one thing we are struggling with is the managed metadata. The old SP2010 uses managed metadata extensively and the docs are all tagged and we need to maintain that in SPO.

We have exported all the metadata from the SP2010 term store INCLUDING GUIDs and have imported them into SPO - again MAINTAINING the GUIDs. (We did this because blogs say that we need to maintain the same GUIDs.) We have confirmed that the GUIDs in SPO do indeed match the SP2010 system.

But, the metadata tags are not maintained on migration for some reason. The import log in the storage account gives some clues: as it's importaing the document, it throws warning like this:

[7/16/2018 1:55:42 AM] [ListItem] [test-document.docx] [Customer Documents/blurb) v1.0.docx] [aaaffe31-d57d-4c56-9a99-fbb4097acb86]  [Warning] Field n68a14bd28664aa7af6f3e2236a0951c cannot be found. Field value will not be imported

What strikes me about this is that the "missing" field isn't a GUID. So, am I missing a step in the migration process?

TIA

m
