Hello all, first post here. I am currently being offered a CIO role at a new organization next month and have been doing research on best practices as my position will go in and technically restructure their IT department
Currently where I am at (not in the IT role) we have an onsite server where each user has a folder on our server and they are given rights to it, along with their supervisor and whoever else needs it. These folders are accessed via File Explorer locally but can only be accessed in-house or through RDP if traveling. We also have the links folder as well as our public folder where all users have access to it.
The new organization has invested in Office 365 with SharePoint and I have been brainstorming which is the best way to utilize SharePoint's features whether it be OneDrive for Business, but hope to have it where they can access their files locally as well as on the road which makes the most sense with OneDrive. I think accessing it via the new intranet could work too, but want to be sure that there is an offline solution as well since I know ODB syncs. I know metadata is the new trend right now but I think folder conventions will be easier since a lot of changes may be happening.
My current organizations way works well, just not the in-house part, so any suggestions or tips is very much appreciated!
