Power BI for Large SharePoint lists

I am unable to create a pivot table for a large list in Sharepoint Online / 365 (500k items).

I can power query the list, and make adjustments to the query, such as appending, to create the query I want.  The data in power query looks good.  When I do this I do not load the data to my workbook or to the data model.

When I attempt to use this data to create either a standard pivot table, or power pivot table, the data load either stalls and I recieve a timeout error, or seems to cycle endlessly.  The most I have let it load is 100MB.

Ideally, I would like to create the pivot table, and leave it in a Power BI library, so users can visit the workbook and slice the data they would like to see.

As an alternative, I can export the list to excel (iquery) which works almost instanteously and use a pivot table.  However, I'm limited to a portion of the data, about 15k items, so this is not ideal.

In general, the data will be used to measure productivity and values on the creation and modification of list items over the course of a given year or quarter.
