Migrate SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint Online - Best Practices?

Hi,

We're trying to migrate our existing SP 2010 applications in to SPO. I came to know that Microsoft Community named "Patterns and Practices" which they contributed and given best practices to migrate into SPO. Ok, let me come to the point in very simple. Can anyone suggest what we can do and which way we can migrate into SPO. Please avoid to provide and share the links, instead please share your ideas.

My Customer wants to migrate into SPO (means cloud - to save cost :)) and they're not ready to pay any extra cost other than SPO. Lets say Azure. We know internally SPO using Azure for some services. that is different story. When I analyzed the existing SP 2010, 80% customization involved and only used 20% OOTB. Let me put out the customization parts and please suggest how we can migrate into SPO,

1) Custom Site Definition / Templates

2) Feature framework with server side code

3) List Event Receiver

4) Timer jobs

5) third party Workflows

6) Custom server side webparts etc.

Now,you may say that all needs to be converted in order to support cloud. All the components we can convert and there are many ways we can convert it. Ok, Let me given some points that customer is not ready to go to Azure / any box for remote provisioning. And the other choice is JSOM, that also has some negative impact,. If customer is trying to create a site using JSOM, in the middle if he close the browser then that also create some problem. Please dont say that force / convince your customer to go for Azure. Let me start this discussion and many folks come up with different approach. please share your ideas. it may helpful to our sharepoint community to migrate into cloud. Nowadays, everybody talking about the cloud but we need to know what capabilities cloud given to us?
